Jefferson Township is located in northern Morris County, NJ. The community has a total area of 42 square miles and has approximately 7,600 housing units. The Township borders Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey's largest fresh water lake. In addition, the community is known for its breathtaking mountain views and protected woodlands. Jefferson can be divided into two major sections: Lake Hopatcong and Milton. Route 15 provides easy access to Lake Hopatcong, where there are thousands of lake-style community homes. Lake Hopatcong (07849) should not be confused with Hopatcong (07843), a town in Sussex County that also borders the lake. The Milton section of Jefferson Township is surrounded by beautiful protected woodlands. This area has an Oak Ridge (07438) mailing address and is closer to Route 23. A small number of homes in Jefferson have a Newfoundland (07435) mailing address. The former estate of Alfred Ringling, owner of the Ringling Bros. Circus, is located in Jefferson. It was not uncommon to find animals from elephants to tigers as well as circus equipment housed in the outbuildings on the estate.

Jefferson is just one of several towns that border Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey's largest fresh water lake, which provides year round activities for its residents, including swimming, boating, jet skiing, water skiing, and fishing. Neighborhoods surrounding Lake Hopatcong in Jefferson Township include Lake Forest, Sandy Point, Brady Park, East Shore Estates, Nolan's Point, Great Cove, Halsey Island, Raccoon Island, Prospect Point, Woodport, Lake Winona, and Brights Cove. Lake Shawnee is a wonderful community that is located just east of Lake Hopatcong and can be easily accessed via Route 15. Homes in Lake Shawnee have a Wharton (07885) mailing address. Neighborhoods in the Milton and Oak Ridge section of Jefferson Township include Cozy Lake, White Rock, Lake Swannanoa, and Longwood Lake. A few homes in Lake Stockholm (07460) are physically located in Jefferson Township as well. Newer housing developments and neighborhoods in Jefferson include Forest Ridge, The Peaks, Water Village, Dawn's Mist, Breezewood Estates, Sleepy Hollow, Kensington Estates, Colonial Oaks, Preston Lakes, Waters Edge, Lake View, and Heather Hills.

Commute

Residents who live in the Lake Hopatcong section of Jefferson can take NJ Route 15 to connect to Interstate 80 for an eastbound commute. Those who live in the Oak Ridge section can access NJ Route 23 for their morning commute or take Berkshire Valley Road to NJ Route 15. NJ Transit has a bus line that runs down NJ Route 23. Lakeland Bus Lines provides service from the Rockaway Townsquare Mall to NY Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan NYC. During rush hour, the bus ride takes about 60 minutes. The train station in Mount Arlington is located to the south.

Public Schools

Jefferson Township Public Schools serve over 3,600 students in 8 schools from Kindergarten through twelfth grade. Schools in the district are Milton School (PreK), Robert F. Drummond (K), Cozy Lake School (1-2), Ellen T. Briggs School (1-2), Arthur T. Stanlick School (3-5), White Rock Elementary School (3-5), Jefferson Township Middle School (6-8) and Jefferson Township High School (9-12).
